Change your SRD cellphone number

Use the Change Mobile Number option on the official SASSA SRD website. You need your 13-digit ID number, a camera for an online identity check and the new SIM to receive an SMS PIN.

Required

13-digit ID number

The South African ID number linked to the SRD application. The current page does not ask for the six-digit Application ID.

Required

Your payment details

Your current payment option. If you are paid into a bank account, choose the bank you last gave SASSA and enter the last four digits of that account number.

Required

A working camera

The page opens an identity check that uses your phone or computer camera to confirm you are the original applicant.

Required

The new SIM

Keep the new number’s SIM in your phone. An SMS PIN is sent to confirm it before the update.

Wait 15 minutes between attempts

If you cancel the identity check, or a PIN has already been sent, the official page makes you wait 15 minutes before you can try again. Check the new number carefully before you request the PIN.

How to change your SRD cellphone number

  1. 1

    Open Change Mobile Number

On srd.sassa.gov.za, open the South African ID holders section and choose Change Mobile Number, or go directly to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/mobile-number-update.

  2. 2

Enter your ID number and the reason

Type the 13-digit ID linked to the application and pick a reason: Lost phone, Used third party phone, New phone, Captured number wrong.

  3. 3

    Confirm your current payment option

Choose how SASSA pays you now. For a bank account, select the bank you last updated with SASSA and enter the last four digits of that account number. Then select Submit.

  4. 4

    Complete the identity check

Allow camera access and follow the on-screen verification. Do it yourself: the check confirms that the person changing the number is the applicant.

  5. 5

    Verify the new number

Enter the new cellphone number, select Send PIN, type the PIN you receive by SMS and select Update Mobile Number.

If the change does not go through

These are messages the official page can show, and what to do next.

Protect your application

  • Enter your ID number and bank digits only on srd.sassa.gov.za, never on a copycat site or form.
  • Do not pay anyone to “unlock” or speed up a number change. The official service is free.
  • Never share a bank PIN, card PIN or SMS PIN with a helper, and do not let someone else do the face check for you.
  • Ignore WhatsApp or social-media “agents” who offer to change your number for you.

What about the Application ID?

An older SRD contact-update form asked for your ID number and six-digit Application ID and allowed one request every 24 hours. The SRD home page now links to the Change Mobile Number page instead, which uses an identity check. For help, call SASSA toll-free on 0800 60 10 11.

Check the update afterwards

Once SASSA has updated your record, use your ID and the new number on the official SRD status check. Do not use a third-party form that asks to store your ID number.

SRD number-change questions

What do I need to change my SRD cellphone number?

Your 13-digit South African ID number, the reason for the change, and your current SRD payment option. If you are paid into a bank account you must pick the bank you last gave SASSA and enter the last four digits of that account number. You also need a phone or computer with a camera for the identity check, and the new SIM so you can receive an SMS PIN.

Can I change my SRD number online with my Application ID?

Not on the current page. As of 12 October 2026 the Change Mobile Number option on srd.sassa.gov.za verifies you with your ID number and an online identity check, not the six-digit Application ID. An older contact-update form that asked for the Application ID is no longer linked from the SRD home page.

Is there a WhatsApp number to change my SRD number?

The official SRD website does not offer a WhatsApp number change. Use the Change Mobile Number page, or call the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11, which the SRD website names for mobile-number problems. Ignore WhatsApp or Facebook “agents” who ask for your ID number, banking digits or PIN.

Why do I have to wait 15 minutes before trying again?

If you cancel the identity check, or a PIN has already been sent, the official page makes you wait 15 minutes before you can retry or request a new PIN. The older Application ID form allowed only one request every 24 hours.

What if the identity check fails or my details cannot be found?

Try again after 15 minutes in good light with your face clearly visible. If the page says your eKYC details cannot be found, it tells you to visit your nearest SASSA office, so take your ID and go in person.

Will All Bursaries change my phone number?

No. All Bursaries is an independent guide and does not collect SRD identity, banking or contact details. Submit them only on the official srd.sassa.gov.za website.

Independent guide: All Bursaries is not SASSA or DSD and cannot update an application. The official Change Mobile Number service was checked on 12 October 2026; follow any newer instructions shown on srd.sassa.gov.za.
