Patrick & Margaret Flanagan Scholarship for Overseas Study

Rhodes University (administered by the Rhodes University Postgraduate Funding Office on behalf of the Patrick & Margaret Flanagan Trust, established under the will of the late Margaret Ellen Flanagan)

The Patrick & Margaret Flanagan Scholarship funds women for full-time postgraduate (Master's or PhD) study at an international university, in any field of study. It is administered by Rhodes University's Postgraduate Funding Office under the bequest of the late Margaret Ellen Flanagan, and the 2027 call advertised it as full-cost funding for international Master's and doctoral study. Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin are the preferred host institutions, but the award is not restricted to them. Candidates must be English-speaking (proficiency in English for tertiary study is enough), and preference goes to applicants of South African descent. The award is distinct from the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford.

Under the 2027 call, travel, relocation and visa costs are the scholar's own responsibility, nothing is paid before registration, and allowances are paid quarterly once the scholar has registered.

Eligible Fields of Study

Rhodes University (administered by the Rhodes University Postgraduate Funding Office on behalf of the Patrick & Margaret Flanagan Trust, established under the will of the late Margaret Ellen Flanagan) supports students in the following disciplines

Open to all fields of study (where candidates are otherwise equal, preference may go to English or a cognate discipline)
Tenable for full-time postgraduate Master's or doctoral study at an international (overseas) university

Eligibility Requirements

  • ✓ Women graduates, irrespective of colour or creed; marital status does not affect eligibility
  • ✓ Preference for applicants of South African descent (a preference rather than an absolute citizenship requirement)
  • ✓ English-speaking: home language English or a real love of the language; proficiency in English for tertiary study is sufficient
  • ✓ Academic merit plus broader qualities of intellect, character and leadership potential
  • ✓ Financial need is considered: other factors being equal, preference goes to applicants whose parents could not afford them the opportunity
  • ✓ Full-time postgraduate (Master's or doctoral) study; the award depends on acceptance by the chosen university
  • ✓ No formal age limit, although the scholarship is described as a 'starter' award rather than a mid-career programme
  • ✓ Scholars are expected to return to South Africa after their studies to apply their skills for the benefit of fellow South Africans

What's Included

  • ✓ Funding for full-time Master's or doctoral study at an international university, advertised for 2027 as full-cost funding
  • ✓ Up to R750,000 per year under the General Conditions, normally for a maximum of two years (a third year is considered only exceptionally)
  • ✓ Tuition fees paid in line with the scholarship conditions; allowances paid quarterly once you have registered
  • ✓ Tenable at any suitable international university; Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin are preferred
  • ✓ A Selection Committee decision also allows registration at a South African university with appropriate co-supervision or research at an overseas institution

Work Commitment

No contractual work-back is stated, but scholars are expected to return to South Africa after completing their studies to apply their skills for the benefit of fellow South Africans. A later Selection Committee decision says scholars should remain in South Africa for a period equal to the number of years funded.
