NSFAS status check on myNSFAS
Your ID number is your myNSFAS username, but there is no public “ID-only” checker. Sign in at my.nsfas.org.za or in the official NSFAS app with your ID number, password and the one-time PIN sent to your phone.
Applied for 2027? Here is what to expect
2027 applications are open until 23:59 on 31 October 2026. NSFAS plans to finish its funding decisions by 30 November, audit them from 1 to 9 December and tell successful applicants in December 2026. Appeals are planned for 10 to 24 December. Until then, “verification” or “assessment” statuses are normal.

How to check your NSFAS status online

Open myNSFAS
Go to my.nsfas.org.za, or open the official NSFAS app linked from www.nsfas.org.za.

Sign in to your account
Enter your ID number and password, then the one-time PIN sent to the cellphone number on your account.

Open your application tracker
Find your application status or tracker. Have your reference number handy.

Read the full notice
Check the stage, any reason given and any action or deadline, not only the status label.

Save proof of any action
After uploading a document or an appeal, check that its status changes and keep a screenshot or confirmation.
What your NSFAS status means
NSFAS’s 2027 guide describes eight stages: apply, verify, documents, eligibility, registration, funding, allowances and support or appeals. These are the statuses it explains:
Application submitted
NSFAS has received your application and given it a reference number. Nothing is needed from you.
Verification in progress
NSFAS is confirming your identity and household income with Home Affairs, SARS and SASSA. Nothing is needed from you.
Awaiting documents
Something is missing or unreadable. Sign in and upload it within the time shown in the notice.
Eligibility assessment / funding decision
Your verified information is being measured against the funding criteria. You are notified of the outcome on myNSFAS and by SMS.
Funding eligible
You meet the funding criteria. Funding is confirmed once your university or TVET college confirms your registration.
Unsuccessful
Your application did not meet a requirement. The reason is shown on myNSFAS, and you may appeal within the appeal window.
The exact wording in your account may differ. The instruction inside your own myNSFAS account is the one to follow.
Fix common status-check problems
You forgot your password
Select Forgot password on the sign-in screen. NSFAS sends a reset link or one-time PIN to the cellphone number and email address on your account. Do not create a second account.
Your details do not verify
NSFAS checks your name, ID number and date of birth against Home Affairs records. If your official details are wrong, ask Home Affairs to correct them.
Documents are missing
Open the request and upload the specific 2027 form or evidence asked for. NSFAS gives 2027 applicants 30 working days to respond; an unsigned consent form is one of the most common hold-ups.
The status has not changed
Assessment continues after the 31 October closing date, and outcomes are planned for December. Check for an unread notice first, then contact NSFAS with your ID number and reference number if no action is shown.
If your application was unsuccessful
Read the reason in myNSFAS. If the portal gives you an appeal option, submit it through your account with evidence that addresses that reason, such as a SARS ITA34 if you are appealing a financial decision. For 2027 applications, NSFAS plans an appeal window from 10 to 24 December 2026 and appeal outcomes by 9 January 2027. Its appeals page says appeals must be lodged within 30 days of receiving your result.

NSFAS status check FAQs
- How do I check my NSFAS status using my ID number?
- Your South African ID number is your myNSFAS username, but you also need your password. Go to my.nsfas.org.za or open the official NSFAS app, sign in with your ID number and password, enter the one-time PIN sent to your cellphone and open your application tracker.
- Can I check NSFAS status without a password?

- What does Awaiting documents mean on NSFAS?
- NSFAS needs a document that is missing or unreadable before it can finish assessing your application. Sign in, upload exactly what is requested and check that the upload went through. For 2027 applications NSFAS gives you 30 working days to respond to a request for more information.
- When will NSFAS 2027 application results come out?
- NSFAS plans to finish its 2027 funding decisions by 30 November 2026 and audit them from 1 to 9 December. The minister said successful applicants will be told in December 2026. Until then, a status such as Verification in progress is normal.
