   Create an account and complete the online application via the CSIR Bursary Connect portal at bursaryconnect.csir.co.za while the call is open (the 2027 call closed on 15 September 2026)

   Select an eligible qualification and study level and complete the form in full; incomplete applications are not considered

   Upload your CV, certified ID copy and latest academic record (Grade 12 applicants add Grade 11 final results; master's and doctoral applicants add proof of their completed degree and a supervisor-supported motivational letter)

   Track your application status with your login details; the CSIR notifies all applicants within two months of the closing date

   Attend a virtual interview if shortlisted

   Sign the bursary agreement, including the work-back obligation, if successful

What does the CSIR bursary cover?

It provides full-cost support. Undergraduate and Honours students receive registration and tuition fees, accommodation and meals, a living allowance, a book allowance and a once-off laptop allowance. Master's and doctoral students receive registration and tuition fees, a living allowance and a once-off laptop allowance, and can apply for extra funding for conferences, thesis publishing or access to instruments.

Who qualifies for the CSIR Bursary Programme?

You must be a South African citizen and a full-time, unemployed student admitted to a local public university. Postgraduate applicants need an average of 65% or above and must be under 35. Undergraduates need strong English, Mathematics and Physical Science results, and must have passed all registered courses so far. Preference goes to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and NSFAS holders.

Do I have to work for the CSIR after my studies?

Yes. The CSIR bursary carries a work-back obligation of one year of employment at the CSIR for every year of funding you receive, giving you a direct route into research and technology careers.

When does the CSIR bursary close and how do I apply?

Applications for the 2027 academic year closed on Tuesday, 15 September 2026 (the 2026 intake closed on 29 August 2025). The CSIR usually opens its call mid-year; 2028 dates had not been announced as of 12 October 2026. Apply online through the portal at bursaryconnect.csir.co.za when the next call opens.
