Anglo American (bursaries offered by its South African business units, mainly Kumba Iron Ore; applications administered by Career Wise)
Anglo American funds South African students in mining-related engineering degrees through bursaries offered by its business units. Since Anglo American Platinum became Valterra Platinum and the thermal coal business became Thungela, its South African bursary adverts have come mainly from Kumba Iron Ore in the Northern Cape. The bursary is awarded a year at a time and can cover tuition, accommodation, meals, books and paid vacation work, in return for a work-back commitment.

Eligibility Requirements
- ✓ South African citizen with a valid 13-digit ID number
- ✓ In Grade 12, or in 1st to 4th year at a recognised South African university (Kumba's 2026 round took 1st- to 3rd-year students)
- ✓ Studying, or planning to study, a mining-related engineering discipline
- ✓ At least 55% for Mathematics in matric (not Mathematical Literacy)
- ✓ Kumba Iron Ore bursaries: only applicants who live in or come from the Northern Cape were considered in the 2026 round
- ✓ Proof of registration or provisional acceptance at a university, plus your academic results
- ✓ If awarded, you must cancel any NSFAS funding for the same year and may not accept another bursary or loan without written approval

Work Commitment
Bursars sign a bursary loan agreement and must work for Anglo American for one year for every year funded, if a suitable job is available; if none is available when you qualify, you are released from the obligation. Declining an offer or leaving early means repaying the bursary, and a parent or guardian signs surety.

- Do I have to work for Anglo American after I graduate?
- Yes, if a job is available. You work one year for every year of funding. If no suitable job exists when you qualify, you are released from the obligation, but if you turn down an offer or leave early you must repay the bursary.
- Can I keep NSFAS if I get an Anglo American bursary?
- No. If you receive an Anglo American bursary for the same year of study you must cancel your NSFAS funding, and you need written approval before accepting any other bursary, grant or loan.
