Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this a general medical bursary?
- No. Despite the name, this is a nursing-only bursary. Life College of Learning offers exactly three nursing qualifications - a Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, and a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. It does not fund medicine (MBChB), physiotherapy, pharmacy, radiography or other health professions.
- Who is eligible?
- South African citizens who are previously disadvantaged and cannot afford tuition, who have a strong academic record (particularly in science and maths), and who intend to enrol for a nursing programme at a Life learning centre. Recipients must commit to work for Life Healthcare for a set period after graduating.
- When and how do I apply?
- Applications are submitted directly to your nearest of the seven Life learning centres (Springs, Cape Town, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Roodepoort), generally in July. The application window runs roughly 15 May to 31 July each year, and outcomes are emailed by 31 October. A non-refundable application fee (reported as R400) applies to the nursing programmes. These dates are indicative - confirm the exact deadline with the college before applying.
- How much does the bursary pay?
- Life Healthcare's official pages do not publish a monetary amount; the bursary covers tuition for the nursing qualification. Some secondary aggregators also mention textbooks/learning materials and a living allowance, but these are not confirmed on official sources. Confirm what is covered directly with the college.
